The Center for Automotive Science & Technology at Weber State University is the nationally recognized resource center for OBD training.  In February 1997, the Center held its first OBD Training Course and has conducted classes on a regular basis since that time.

This 3-day training course familiarizes each participant with the OBD regulations as they currently apply to all vehicle manufacturers.  This course also details the methods and technologies utilized by the vehicle and scan tool manufacturers.

The course approaches OBD  in the same order in which the Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) test procedure is performed with each related area thoroughly detailed, including; Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) operation, Readiness Codes and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (which includes monitoring requirements and strategies).

Each major topic includes structured worksheets designed to support and reinforce the discussion segment of the training course.  Worksheets are designed to be used with any OBD compliant vehicle and scan tool.

Topics Discussed

Standardized emissions related terminology; i.e., the names of emission control components and systems consistent with SAE J1930
MIL location and illumination protocols
Standardized communication, Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) and cavity assignment
Stored Engine Conditions (Freeze Frame)
Readiness Codes (I/M Readiness Indicators)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) formatting and operation
On-board monitoring requirements for inputs, outputs, all emission control systems and engine misfire
OBD scan tool operation and data retrieval methods

Course Activities

Identify OBD impacts on I/M testing
View, record and operate the on-board system to set and clear Readiness Codes
Simulate failure modes to monitor the response of the OBD system.  Response monitoring includes viewing and interpreting:  DTC (both single and two trip types), Stored Engine Conditions and live data for fault and repair verification
Perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) DTC information clear procedures
